ONDC: follow the entire order journey

For a seller, discovery matters most when catalogue, fulfilment, payments and support work together.

Understand the participant’s role

ONDC’s official material describes an open network involving buyer and seller applications and other participants. Its seller-participant page explains responsibilities that include connecting sellers, digitizing catalogues, handling payment dispersal and helping sellers understand fulfilment practices.

For a business owner, the practical task is to understand who performs each part of a specific transaction. ONDC’s model should not be reduced to the assumption that one marketplace operator owns every step. The arrangement with the chosen participant, the network’s applicable policies and the customer’s actual journey all matter to how the business operates.

Prepare the catalogue as an operating record

A useful product listing needs more than an attractive image. Check that the description, variants, units and availability correspond to what the team can actually fulfil. Decide who updates stock information and what happens when a product becomes unavailable after somebody has begun an order.

Start with a manageable catalogue and review it from the customer’s perspective. Can a person distinguish two similar items? Are package sizes and relevant conditions understandable? Does the photograph represent the product being offered? These checks are editorial operating suggestions, not a claim that they replace the participant’s onboarding or policy requirements.

Trace a test order across the handoffs

Map the sequence from discovery to order confirmation, fulfilment, delivery and settlement. For each step, identify the responsible participant, the reference used to locate the transaction and the information the seller can see. Include the path for a cancellation or return.

A test is useful when it exposes an ambiguous handoff. For example, the team may know that an order was accepted while being uncertain about who owns a delivery exception. Resolve that question before increasing volume. Keep the original order reference and the relevant support record connected so that the customer does not have to explain the same problem repeatedly.

Examine the economics from actual records

Review the terms offered by the selected service providers and the costs the business incurs to complete the order. Keep product margin, fulfilment expense and other applicable charges understandable in the same operating view. A gross order total alone cannot establish whether the channel is working for the seller.

Compare the experience across a small set of completed orders, using consistent definitions. Record cancellations, returns and support effort as well as successful deliveries. This article makes no claim about a guaranteed commission level, growth rate or profit outcome on the network. Those need current terms and evidence from the business itself.

Create a repeatable support loop

Choose a colleague to review recurring exceptions and turn them into changes in the catalogue or fulfilment process. If customers repeatedly ask the same question, improve the product information. If an operational mismatch recurs, address the handoff rather than treating each incident as unrelated.

ONDC’s published resources include seller checklists and operational guidance that can support this work. Use them with the chosen participant’s current instructions. A well-prepared seller will know how an order is discovered, fulfilled, reconciled and supported. That gives digital discovery a stronger chance of becoming a dependable commercial relationship, while keeping expectations anchored in the actual service arrangement.
